Rich Barker

The Barker Team

Richard Barker was born and raised in Boston MA. Rich excelled early in athletics and played MLB for 7 years with the Chicago cubs. Upon retirement Rich moved his family to Fountain Hills in 1997. Rich became the proud father of twin daughters and found real estate as a career that could drive his business goals while allowing him to serve his community and be close to his family.
Rich Is passionate about his home of Fountain Hills and developing the business and social standing of the city his family has made home. Rich develops, fosters, and maintains local business relationships while working to lead efforts to bring exposure to the community and its small business owners. Rich donates his time and money to support the Fountain Hills High School as the Girls softball coach and sponsor of Golden Eagle Park field, and creating the Richard F. Barker Foundation to find missing and exploited children responsible for reuniting 53 Valley children with their families.
Over the years Rich Barker has inspired his team to give back through many generous and community friendly events. Rich donated hundreds of pies during thanksgiving, sets up a fun and interactive tail gating party for the Thanksgiving Day Parade, purchases billboards to help locate lost youth. These are just a few of the wonderful and generous gestures Rich Barker provides. Rich is the perfect nominee for business person of the year as he continually and consistently promotes the Town, his business, the community all while giving back in a grand fashion.

Joe Calo

Mason Pro Services

Joseph Calo was raised in Phoenix, Arizona but also spent a lot of time visiting his family in Gesulado, Italy. He is very proud of his Italian heritage and learned at an early age to treasure his time with family and friends. He incorporates these values in everything he does.
Joe and his wife, Danielle, met at a young age, and settled in Fountain Hills after living for a short time in Colorado. They love the beautiful Fountain Hills scenery —which has a similar landscape to Gesulado, Italy. Joe and his wife are proud parents of three amazing daughters, and their fur-baby, Capri.  Known as a “jack of all trades,” Joe is experienced in electrical, construction, and HVAC. But his green thumb and love of good food and wine he credits to his mother, who owns Michelina’s restaurant, where Joe has worked for many years. Joe is always eager to help and support his community. He sees and treats all his customers, neighbors, and friends as family.
I nominate Joe Calo for business person of the year due to his quiet strength and positive support for all other local businesses in town. He is always cheering on and encouraging success with other business owners as he continues to successfully build the loyal customer base at Mason. As a local resident he takes pride in our community and goes above and beyond for his customers at Mason Pro Services.

I believe Martin may been Business Person of the year over three decades ago however he is very deserving of this nomination today. Martin Dawson believed in Fountain Hills when he started his company here 50 years ago and still believes in this community. He is the epitome of Business person of the year as the owner of the longest running business in Fountain Hills still successfully running today.

Bart Shea

Shea Connelly Development

I was married to my Wife Cheryl in Fountain Hills in 1989 at Shepherd of the Hills in what is the now social building. I became a full-time resident in 1991 after my son was born because I believed then and now that Fountain Hills is the best place to raise children. I firmly believe that the best way to keep it that is to continually invest in your hometown. To that end we will completion of the Downtown area I took the last 10 years to complete. Along the way I have met the best people in this little town we call home. What I love most is we can all have an opinion but that for the most part it is never personal. I have quietly sponsored a lot of events and people in Fountain Hills, I vote with my whole heart and believe that this is the best little town in the world, just ask Jay Schlum. I sponsor to the Veterans and the Rotary the Art league and Golden Retriever Dark Sky and pretty much any local with a good cause, and they are all good causes.
Since there isn’t a developer of the year category, I nominate Bart Shea as the Business Person of the year. A business developer who has spent millions upon millions of dollars investing the community is absolutely deserving of this award. Not only does he invest in the Town but he also gives back continually. He is a member of the Four Peaks Rotary service club and you will regularly see him donating financially, with services and donating time to projects within Fountain Hills.

Danny Cafaro

Atticus Books & Music

Dan Cafaro is a publisher, bookseller, executive editor, and writer living in Fountain Hills, a place he and his family have called home for more than 12 years. Dan has more than 30 years experience working with teams of editors, writers, designers, marketers, visionaries, and dreamers in an association publishing environment, acting as program director for many of those years. Dan has spent a lifetime immersing himself in bookstore culture, visiting (and working in) bookstores, learning the trade, and feeding his addiction to bound printed matter. He first founded Atticus Books, a genre-busting literary press, in 2010.  Dan’s other passion for music (and encouragement from his son, Shawn, that “vinyl was back”), drove him to add a wide selection of new and used records to the bookshop. Following six months of assembly with his wife, Marjean, at the fountain-view location, in September 2022, Atticus Books & Music was born.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Love this place.
We've been waiting for a long time for a hometown books and music store and Atticus does not disappoint. It's exactly what we have hoped for our community. We've already found some treasures. Their business brings more character and culture to our awesome town!
Jill & Jeremy Keefe

Jill & Jeremy Keefe

Good Living Greens

Jeremy and Jill Keefe fell in love with the town and each other while walking their dogs around the lake. Their "doggy dates" led to true love, so they became residents in 2017 and married at Fountain Park in 2018. Passionate about health and clean food supply, this enterprising couple started Good Living Greens in 2019 by growing organic microgreens and delivering them to their friends and neighbors. Last April, they expanded their vision to an independent greengrocer focused on three things: clean, local and healthy. Ask them about their purpose and they will tell you: "Because we love you and want you to live a long time." Jill is a Fountain Hills Leadership Academy graduate and serves on the Strategic Planning Advisory Commission. Jeremy consults for friends and neighbors growing their own gardens.
Jill has started and grown a great business in Fountain Hills. They are active in the community, provide local products and great service! I love Good Living Greens, I enjoy going in there and seeing their new products and speaking with Jill & Jeremy.

Veeta Rose

Veeta's Vegan

Veeta's Vegan passion started in 1976 growing up with three generations in the kitchen. Then as my father became ill, I began creating healthy vegan foods that even carnivores would enjoy. Turn the clock forward 20 years and my passion still remains the same, to help people eat healthier and live an abundant full life.
Delicious, fresh and healthy food offering a menu not found at other Fountain Hills restaurants. Veeta's sign went up a couple of years ago, but the opening was delayed by Covid. Veeta always has a warm welcome for visitor and customers. It's a truly unique offering for Fountain Hills. The restaurant has a presence at our Wednesday Farmers Market and was at this week's Fair. They haven't been open for long, but have become a local favorite in town.

Encore For More

Encore for More organized as Senior Services Inc in 1990 thanks to community volunteers answering the need for home delivered meals. Over the last 32 years this organization has continued to find ways to serve and enhance the senior experience in Fountain Hills. From building a lending collection of medical equipment, providing a meeting place for Senior activities and programs, to awarding grants to other organizational efforts that shared our goal to serve the Senior community, Encore continues to carry on the legacy of Senior Services Inc. Newer programs including Bingo, Speakers Bureau, and New Adventures are receiving rave reviews. Fountain Hills Elks Lodge

The Fountain Hills Elks Lodge is a small ( but mighty) non-profit faternal organization) whose goals are a commitment to our Community, youth, and our Veterans.   Each year the local elks Lodge take 30 local elementary children ( selected by working with McDowell Mountain elementary school) shopping for Christmas. This event also includes grocery cards for the families and snack packs for the children.  Santa plays a big role. (event costs over $5000). We also give $6000 in high school scholarships and support the golf  and softball teams.  Generous cash donations are given to Extended Hands in support of their Thanksgiving and Easter fooddrives. Much is done for our Veterans. Main goals are to help the homeless find comfort and permanent housing.  This is done with clothing drives, paying deposits; bills, purchase of bus passes, McDonald's gift cards, grocery cards and even pet supplies for their best friends.   Pictured is the pick up of airmattresses, bedding, clothing, food and etc. by Community Bridges Inc. Our partner in distributing to the homeless and newly housed Veterans. Our budget value of goods annually for our Veterans is over $10,000. All of this accomplished by our members whoub  volunteer their time and gifts as a commitment to our  community.
The Fountain Hills Elks donated thousands of dollars within the community on an annual basis. This includes donations of clothing, blankets, canned goods and gift cards to veterans; a Christmas Shooing Spree for under-served Children; scholarships for continuing education and raising money for FH athletic teams. As well, it educates young people with its Drug Awareness Program and the Annual Hoop Shoot

Fountain Hills Sister Cities

Our organization was established in 2000.  In 2022 we donated nearly $43,000 to our sister city in Zamość, Poland to help Ukrainian refugees and $3000 to Ataco.  SC also donated locally to Inspiration Academy and FH PTO to assist with our ongoing student exchange program. We help sponsor Oktoberfest and hosted the Annual Arizona Sister City conference with 13 Arizona Sister Cities attending.  Our sister Cities include Dierdorf, Germany, Ataco, El Salvador and Zamość Poland.  Many local students have visited Germany, Poland and El Salvador successfully.
The Sister Cities have done an amazing job supporting efforts in Ukraine which they continue to do. Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of Russia invading Ukraine. Ironically, one of my nurse’s at Mayo is from Ukraine and still has friends and family in Kyiv. I shared the story of the work Fountain Hills Sister Cities is doing to help. It brought him to tears and he was so appreciative and beyond grateful. We must continue to help our global neighbors in need.
Dolly at FHL High Resolution

Tender Little Hearts

We provide literacy promotion and reading encouragement programs at schools and libraries, as well as offer therapy visits to senior care facilities. We aspire to create an environment where every little horse and donkey is given a purpose to enrich a human life, bring joy and comfort, and leave every person with a reason to smile. We are driven by a single goal -- to do our part in making the world a better place. We may be small, but our miniature horses and donkeys are doing mighty work with kids and seniors in Fountain Hills.
I totally fell in love with this nonprofit the first time I met them. They take mini horses to the library for children to read to them.. They visit our senior care centers. They support local business by bringing the mini horses to enhance an event. Terry brought her mini horse, Dolly, to our Make a Wish day for a young Native American girl with terminal cancer. They have been at Flutter at the Fountain for guests to enjoy. They have helped support the 4 Peaks DAR group who work with veterans. They participate in our Thanksgiving Day parade... I am sure I am missing even more of their work and support of Fountain Hills. AND, they offer these services free of charge to us. I cannot think of a better nonprofit for Fountain Hills to honor for their continued love, amazing therapy visits, and generous support to better the lives of those in Fountain Hills.

Tana Boersma

Tana Boersma and her husband, Jay, have been married for 30 years, lived in Fountain Hills since 2002 and have 3 children.
Tana works with Jay at Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. where for the last 24 years they have enjoyed helping families become homeowners.
In addition to volunteering at FHUSD and organizing Mission Trips to Rocky Point, Tana loves spending time with her family, traveling, hiking and just hanging out.
Tana has served as the FH Athletic Booster Club Treasurer for the last 5 years. She has a passion for our community and its kids and uses her talents to ensure the local student athletes and coaches have what is necessary to be successful and thrive in their sports.
Many unsung heroes live in Fountain Hills. These everyday heroes make such an impact on the lives of others, yet they continue to stay behind the scenes never taking credit for the countless hours spent volunteering. Tana Boersma, from the Fountain Hills Athletic Booster Club, is one of those unsung heroes. I am always amazed at her grace, humility, hard work, organizational ability, grit, and optimism. In addition to working with everyone from the Booster Club to secure funding for many FHUSD athletic projects, as Treasurer she works behind the scenes and helps out wherever is needed. You may have seen her in the concession stand, handing out flyers, or even speaking with a group on ways to donate to athletics - she will step in anywhere. I cannot think of a person who personifies the Volunteer of the Year more than Tana Boersma.

"Jelaine is the hardest working PTO President the FHUSD has ever had. Jelaine is constantly 3 steps ahead in planning and facilitating fundraisers, Book Fairs, Back to School Events, and staff requests. She knows the who’s, what’s, when’s, and how’s of our district. In the 2 years that she has been PTO President she has helped raise a lot of money that goes back directly towards the school and it’s needs. She is a great leader and is always thinking of ways the PTO can better serve its students and staff. "

Kim Kamins

I moved to Fountain Hills in 2008, when I met and married the love of my life. I have one son who inspires me every day of my life. In 2010 I started volunteering in cat rescue and in 2012, founded Fearless Kitty Rescue, a non-profit, no-kill cat rescue. As a volunteer building a cat rescue from the ground up, there were many challenges I had to overcome in order to be successful. I was able to achieve my goals only because of the many other volunteers who helped me along the way. Today, Fearless Kitty Rescue is a thriving organization helping save hundreds of homeless cats and kittens every year.
Since its inception, Fearless Kitty Rescue has taken in and nurtured 2,480 cats and kittens from all over Arizona. This level of success happened as a direct result of Kim’s steadfast vision and unwavering commitment, along with her countless hours of time and energy contributed over the years. Until her recent retirement as President/CEO of FKR, she has dedicated her life to the rescue and has never taken a single penny for herself. Kim stays involved with the rescue as an advisor to the board and continues to view herself as one of 162 Fearless Kitty Rescue volunteers. We are grateful for Kim’s vision and contributions throughout the last ten years. Her leadership and commitment to this cause has deeply impacted feline homelessness within and beyond our Fountain Hills community. Kim Kamins is an outstanding volunteer within Fountain Hills.

Cristine Barsema

I have taught at FHHS for 23 years. I love to teach math to students at all levels. I want to give students the knowledge of math and show them that they can achieve at it. I have been married for 26 years and have two children. My daughter graduated in 2020 and my son is in 10th grade. I have a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree. I teach all levels of math ranging from Resource to Calculus. My day is full of lessons and teaching the students so they all learn. I love teaching and seeing the “lightbulb” go off in students’ heads when they truly understand the material.
She’s a really good math teacher and this is the first year I actually know what I’m doing because she teaches so well. I can tell she really cares about us and wants us to do well.

Kryssie Beard

Middle School is such an exciting time! I began my Middle School teaching career in 2008, in Tucson, Az, and never looked back. I received both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Western Governor's University. We moved to Fountain Hills in 2020, where I teach Middle Grades Language Arts at FHMS; this is my third year. I am a wife and mother of 4 adult children, and we have one little dog and one little cat. I am a sports fan who collects key chains. I enjoy reading, watching sports and movies, playing board games, listening to music, working out, and spending time with family and friends.
Mrs. Beard is an exemplary educator. She commands respect in a way that still makes her students feel supported. My daughter has explained on multiple occasions how Ms. Beard has changed her attitude about writing and how much she enjoys learning in Ms. Beard’s class. She’s the perfect teacher for her class.

Jeffrey Bonner

A graduate from Fountain Hills High School in 2012. He returned to the district about 4-5 years ago. Since starting at the school as the Head Varsity Basketball Coach and Security Guard, he's been willing and able to take on any role necessary to see the school succeed. Currently his role at Fountain Hills High School are teaching PE/Health, AVID and coaching the boys basketball team. For his efforts throughout his time in the district he also has an A+ School of Excellence Award and an AVID Committee Award. He really values being a part of this community and giving back in any way he can. As mentioned, this is heavily fueled by him attending all 4 years of high school here and having dreams of one day doing exactly what he is doing now.
Not only does Jeff teach our PE and Heath Classes, he recently became a AVID teacher(a program for students who will be the first to go to college) and a PBIS coordinator (Positive Behavior Incentive Program). Lastly, he is our Varsity Basketball coach and of course has created an amazing season, but is a role model to all the students on site, alway the most positive attitude.

Multiple people recommended Mark Daniels and after meeting with him, I was impressed by his demeanor, knowledge, and overall welcomeness. I'm looking forward to working with him.

Susan Linkous

The Linkous Group, Ltd.

30 years and still in love. . .
I moved here 30 years ago with the purchase of my first home and a business plan for my own financial services practice and what a fantastic decision that was! Not a day goes by that I am not thankful for this community and all that it offers. The Linkous Group is a fiduciary fee-based, Registered Investment Advisor serving clients nationwide. Industry awards and accolades aside, it’s all the love I feel each time I drive over the hill and see my home, each memory created raising Sophia Rose here, each walk with Greta, our German Shepherd rescue, each friend I meet daily in town and each time I find a way to give back. Showing our love means choosing local businesses first, offering financial support to our local events, organizations and charities and, most importantly of all. . . telling everyone that will listen what an honor it is to be a part of Fountain Hills.  Thank you and here’s to the next 30,
Susan Linkous spent over 30 years supporting local contractors, shops, and restaurants. She has also given much support to the local charities and rescues in town as well.
Susan has won the 5 Star Wealth Manager many times over her career.
She is very involved with PBS and public radio as it is headquartered here in town.
Susan Linkous is an excellent source of guidance when making financial decisions. I believe she deserves this award because of how dedicated she is to her clients, she truly is smart.

Mountain View Kitchen

Jennifer Ward

We are honored to be nominated for restaurant of the year. My culinary career began when I was just a child in my grandmothers kitchen. She handed down many of the recipes we use today at Mountain View Kitchen, and my Culinary Arts degree was obtained from Northwest Culinary Institute in 2010 while owning Hand and Hand Catering. After moving back home to the Nashville Tennessee area, I spent 6 years as a personal chef and did some minor Catering. My husband came to Arizona to attend MMI, and upon graduation, he was hired by Desert Wind Harley Davidson, and Arizona became our home. In 2021, we were able to buy a home and there was no other choice than Fountain Hills. Soon after, the concept of Mountain View Kitchen was born. Our goal is to make you feel at home. Our mission is to serve excellent food made with the highest quality of ingredients with a touch of Southern hospitality.
Having a meal at Mountain View Kitchen is the next best thing to enjoying home cooking at a favorite family member's house. Jennifer's warm Southern hospitality, the bright and welcoming atmosphere at the restaurant, the great service, and of course the delicious food make it a favorite place to go. After hours, I've attended a number of private events that she's hosted for various occasions and club meetings, and she never fails to prepare fabulous dishes to fit any theme and ethnic cuisine, plus some delicious Chamber of Commerce breakfasts.

All outstanding and worth every penny. Price increases after the pandemic have been reasonable and not excessive. Service... Continues to be benchmark outstanding in terms of not just the service but in the personalities and the personal touch that the staff provides all of which.... Is a reflection of the owner.

Lisa Berry

Chill Boutique

When mother-daughter duo, Susan Maisel and Lisa Berry, relocated from Indiana to Fountain Hills in 2021, they both knew that this was going to be the beginning of the best chapter of their lives! Susan, a retired physician, and Lisa, a former public policy writer, yoga teacher, massage therapist and boutique owner, have always shared one key thing in common-- a passion for fashion! In 2022, Chill Boutique was born with the mission of helping women appreciate their unique selves, creating a sense of loving community, and bringing joy to the art of getting dressed. Lisa, who runs the day-to-day operations of the business, strives to bring to customers a constantly-evolving selection of clothing, shoes and accessories that support an elevated, yet laid-back look and lifestyle. Her in-store personal styling, as well as increasingly-popular YouTube channel, Zero Waste Closet, are motivating women both locally (and even worldwide!) to explore the benefits of paring down, creating capsule wardrobes, and traveling lightly, without sacrificing style.
I was hearing about Lisa and Chill Boutique almost immediately after she opened her business, as word spread about her bubbly personality, wonderful customer service, and trendy fashions that customers loved to shop for. She has since gotten recognition for her informative and fun fashion videos and the collaborative events she hosts in her shop. I think Chill Boutique is a great asset to the community.
