Story-telling is key in marketing

This week I had the opportunity to meet with a member who joined 20 years ago. During our conversation he often remarked at how surprised he was to hear me talking about the future of the Chamber. We discussed our vision, mission and the importance of being a dynamic organization. Of course, I didn’t say, “I’m going to tell you our vision” but simply shared how we have changed our programs according to needs of our members and how we will continue to do so.
 
As many of you know, I often discuss the Chamber’s mission to serve members and our future plans. I believe it’s my responsibility to maintain your trust in me and us… but, also hear your feedback about the Chamber’s programs, services and goals.
 
Story-telling plays a key role in building trust and consensus in today’s business environment. When people understand the reasons (or the “why”) we exist, it allows them to feel involved and identify those connections we have in comment. It also builds a deeper level of trust because we shared more than expected.
 
Talking about our members is something important. Each time I share a story about a success story, or a challenging situation, it’s based on my belief that by understanding others we too may benefit. Sometimes I talk about how we helped a few members with construction issues during the repaving of Saguaro and others may be as simple as making connections for new members.
 
Bottom line, I collect great examples of how our members leverage their Chamber membership to grow their company and local relationships. I share on social media, email, in small groups, one-on-one and large group settings. 
 
I hope you will consider how to craft your business stories to use in creating excitement about your company.
